Portable Oxygen Concentrators are small, lightweight Oxygen Concentrators. They use the air in the atmosphere, filter it, and leave behind air that is 90-95% oxygen for the user.
Portable Oxygen Concentrators specifically are a much more travel friendly alternative to the typical mains powered machine you might use at home. These portable machines are much smaller and lighter and are typically carried in a small bag that goes over your shoulder, in a backpack, or sometimes on a small cart. Unlike the traditional mains powered machine, Portable Oxygen Concentrators are powered through small rechargeable lithium batteries, allowing you to use your machine on the go.
Due to their much smaller size, Portable Oxygen Concentrators don’t produce as much Oxygen as the at-home machine. Portable machines typically supply oxygen via pulse dose technology, however, there is a small selection of machines on the market that can also deliver a continuous flow. However, portable machines with a continuous flow typically only go up to around 3 Litres Per Minute. If you are unfamiliar with pulse dose technology, pulse dose delivers oxygen to the user upon inhalation. The machine uses in-built technology to detect when the user is inhaling and delivers a small pulse of oxygen as and when the user requires.
As most Portable Oxygen Concentrators use pulse dose technology, they are typically only recommended to users who have been approved for pulse dose technology by their doctor or respiratory nurse.
If you’re using a portable machine that offers continuous flow technology, your prescribed flow setting must be within the flow range offered by the machine. This will typically be between 1 and 3 Litres Per Minute, however, this will vary depending on the machine. Therefore, these types of portable machines are not suitable for users prescribed with a high flow setting.
